Project Description
In Willebroek, Belgium, a state-of-the-art energy recovery plant is being built for Imerys, led by E.ON. The project’s goal is to utilize synthesis gases, which were previously unused waste byproducts, for energy generation. This sustainable initiative not only significantly reduces CO₂ emissions but also improves the environmental footprint of the region.
Imerys generates large volumes of synthesis gases as byproducts during the production of its mineral-based solutions. The new energy recovery plant will harness these gases to produce energy. The facility will generate electricity with a highly efficient steam turbine, delivering up to 29 MW of power. The electricity produced will not only meet Imerys’ local energy demands but also supply power for 40,000 households in the surrounding area.
Additionally, the innovative use of exhaust gases reduces the need for conventional power generation while improving local air quality by minimizing sulfur and nitrogen emissions through an advanced flue gas cleaning system. This plant serves as a flagship project for sustainable energy solutions in the Benelux region.
Project Roles and Responsibilities
E.ON is responsible for the construction and implementation of the energy recovery plant and serves as the main partner to Imerys, a leading provider of mineral-based solutions. Imerys will operate the plant and supply the necessary synthesis gases from its upstream in-house production processes.
At Bomafa, we are proud to support this ambitious project by providing a state-of-the-art steam conditioning station, which is both technologically advanced and compliant with the highest safety standards.
Bomafa’s Contribution in Detail
The five-stage steam conditioning station we supplied is a key component of the plant. Manufactured in accordance with the TRD 421 safety standard, it ensures maximum safety and reliability during operation. Key features of this station include:
- Innovative Design: A modern construction design allows for simple and time-saving disassembly with minimal effort, significantly enhancing maintenance efficiency.
- Hydraulic System: A cutting-edge hydraulic system has been integrated to ensure precise regulation and optimal performance.
- Locally Produced in Germany: The entire production process took place locally at our facility in Germany, in close collaboration with and consideration of the requirements of our Benelux partners. This guarantees top-tier quality standards, precision, and a solution tailored to the specific regional needs.
Thanks to this technological innovation, the steam conditioning station plays a pivotal role in enhancing the overall efficiency and sustainability of the project.
Conclusion
The project in Willebroek exemplifies the successful collaboration between international companies and highlights how innovative technologies can contribute to sustainable energy utilization. We are proud to be part of this groundbreaking initiative, making a positive impact on the environment and energy efficiency in the region.
